Your fashion focus may be set firmly on the gorgeous spring looks set to arrive in store in the New Year, but don't miss out on snapping up a few long-lasting wardrobe essentials in the January sales.
1.Classic trench coat.
If you see one of these in your size in the sales, snap it up. They've been a spring and autumn classic for decades, and that's not about to change. Soft sand colours are best, tan and black are also good.
2.Great fit jeans.
Forget worrying about which cut is most on trend - if you know a particular style flatters your rear then grab it while you can. Dark blue denim is a failsafe option.
3.Soft tops.
Hardly one we need to explain - the humble jersey tee is an essential part of every woman's wardrobe. Look for long silhouettes and quality fabrics.
4.Luxe Lingerie.
Since lingerie should always be bought to fit and flatter and not to follow trends, the sales offer a great opportunity to re-stock the underwear drawer...just in time for Valentine's day.
5.Flat boots.
A hardy perennial, classic biker or riding boot styles are worth buying in January. It's not just next winter that you'll get to wear them - let's face it, it's often cold and rainy right through until April.
6.Slouchy leather tote.
We're not talking ‘It' bags, or must-have of the moment bags, we mean a classic, soft leather tote in a neutral shade; tan and black being the best choice. As a much-loved day bag it could last you years.
7.Silver and gold jewellery.
Trends in costume jewellery may come and go, but simple, elegant silver and gold accessories will carry you from season to season. Go for the basics, like delicate earrings or necklaces.
8.Elegant black heels.
Slim heel, elegant toe, and lots of height - classic black heels are so flattering and useful it pays to have a few well-fitting styles in the closet.
9.Cosy cashmere.
Soft, cosy, elegant, what's not to love? Cashmere sweaters and cardigans are a wardrobe staple.
10.Boyish brogues.
The flat brogue is still popular for S/S11 so don't fear that it will be a redundant purchase. They work as well with flirty floral dresses for summer as with slim winter pants.
